In aircraft manufacturing, the door is an integral part of the production process, due to the critical need for the door to open reliably on demand. Most facilities are constructed with multiple bays, which limits the effectiveness of conventional sliding hangar doors because they require considerable dead space. Conventional sliding doors are not sufficiently tight, causing bird and air infiltration problems, and resulting in energy loss and an unpleasant working atmosphere. In northern climates, ice and snow build-up in conventional door tracks make it difficult to keep the door clean and operational. Under these conditions, a special heating system is sometimes installed to keep the track warm and operable adding considerable operational costs.
